The goal of Child Rights Clubs is to enable Zambian children to be aware of their rights, and empower them to take a leading role in decision-making and for them to grow up as responsible citizens.
The project aims to capacity build children to manage and support each other in learning about their rights. Capacity building of children in leadership, facilitation and coordination skills is of importance in order for the children to own the clubs and to shape these clubs in a way that best enables them to meaningfully learn about their rights and to claim the rights in a responsible manner.
ZCEA acknowledges the diverse experiences that children bring to a learning situation and aims to provide a platform for children’s sharing of learning and experiences. ZCEA realises the important role that adult support plays in enabling children to learn about their rights and therefore, it works to enhance adults’ understanding and appreciation of children’s rights and the vital role that adults play in guiding children to achieve their potential.
The project seeks to contribute to the body of knowledge on root causes of children’s rights violations therefore apart from training, awareness raising through workshops and media campaigns there is also research conducted on root causes of children’s rights violations.
Research on public knowledge of children’s rights, attitudes towards children’s rights and practices serves to inform ZCEA’s interventions in its
promotion and advocacy of children’s rights. Production of information communication and education materials on children’s rights has also been a mainstay of the project’s activities.
Currently there are 385 Child Rights Clubs in schools in Zambia with an average membership of 60 children per club.
